Will it be fourth time lucky for Glasgow?

Al is ready for Euro challenge
It will be a case of new competition, same old opposition for Glasgow Warriors when they kick off their Heineken Cup campaign against Saracens, after the two teams faced each other three times in the Challenge Cup last season.

However Glasgow captain Ally Kellock believes they can turn round the results of two narrow defeats and a draw in two pool games and a quarter-final, with both sides having recruited strongly over the summer.

Saracens have brought in the likes of New Zealand second row Chris Jack, but lock Kellock says his players are looking forward to facing the high-flying English club.

"Playing Saracens is a strange one because we know them so well from last year, but it is good that we competed with them last year and showed us at times that we could have won games even though they came out on top," said the Scotland lock.

"They are a wealthy club and can bring in world class players such as Chris Jack, but we have brought in quality as well with guys like Daryl Gibson who is also an All Black albeit from a different era.

"Daryl is like a lot of the guys such as Todd Blackadder because everything he does is very professional and that lifts training and lifts everybody’s game."

It is a difficult group with Saracens and Biarritz, while Kellock refuses to accept that Italians Viadana will be easy opposition the obvious focus is on the giants from England and France.

However Glasgow’s confidence has been lifted by reaching the Challenge Cup quarter-finals and a strong finish in the Magners League last season.

"Reaching the quarter-final last year was good for us, even though it was in the lesser competition. It gave us a taste for it, we are trying to grow rugby in Glasgow and when we did that we got a lot more press coverage in the latter stages which helps," he said.

"We are going all right this season too, home form is reasonable, but it is tough with players who have been away and a lot of new players, but they are all quality so it is up to us to get back to where we were at the end of last season when we were winning games regularly.

"I am looking forward to facing Chris Jack, that will be a good challenge, but even last year they had quality in the second row at Saracens.

"The Borders gave Biarritz a good run last year so the former Reivers guys have come in and told us about that, it will be good to have people in our team who have played against them."

I hope so. I can't really put my finger on why I dislike Sarries so much but I just do. Time we put them away.

I'll put my finger on it for you. Their fans think that what they watch week in week out is fantastic rugby. They applaud kicks to touch and catch and drives as if they had just scored the best try ever seen. Boring, boring Sarries.... repeat. (I hope this gets a reaction and they try an expansive game this time.)

Yeah thats probably it.

I am so sorry you think Saracens winning (at least not losing) three times in a row is boring, we welcome all comers down south without predjuice. So you are most welcome, with the risk of being bored again ;o)

I think we just like to support and encourage our team?!? Can't say I dislike your team really , more indifferent really. Lets hope its an exciting match as all our matches have been this season so far. Good luck against Biarritz ;p

Please don't swallow the English forward dominated game nonsence that magners league commentators churn out. Saracens were top scorers & top try scorers in last years GP. We can play expansive if we need to but at the same time are happy to bully teams upfront if they lack grunt. I'd happily take a 7-6 victory with a Penalty try than an open 32-34 loss like we had against Sale!

I'd love to see us stick it to this lot. They were so very lucky last season and we need to put the record straight. Perhaps Ulster could lend them their "eats Kellocks for breakfast" banner. It's been nothing but good luck for us!

The Sarries' fans have always made us most welcome in the bar after the game. A good crowd.

Yes, they have made us welcome in the bar. But each time we have been there they were holding the get out of jail free card as the better team lost on the day. We will see how it is when the shoe is on the other foot.

i heard glasgow only had over 1000 people at the match on friday night and a good few were from ulster, what will happen in 10 years time if thats all the interest your team gets, and with a country only having 2 teams why was their only 2 scottish backs in the team, that might suit glasgow but in a good few years time what is going to happen to scotland

So much anomosity in one place. Is this a rugby website? It's almost like stumbling onto an old firm website.

Thanks for your concern Alan but I think you'd do better to worry about Ulster and leave us to concentrate on Glasgow.

Hey, look at your own team first glagowrule! (or are you another Sarrie fan in disguise on the site?). Anyway, I look forward to the game and the hospitality from our friends in Watford. Our pack will not be intimidated if they choose to play the English game, but let's hope it's a good game in any case.
